Understand your training requirements.
Different organizations are subject to different workplace violence and de-escalation training requirements.
PSP helps your staff complete many of the training elements required by The Joint Commission, Cal/OSHA, and CMS—while making clear what your organization still needs to provide.

Three standards PSP supports
The Joint Commission
NPG.02.04.01 EP 2- Who
- Joint Commission-accredited hospitals, including VA medical centers
- When
- At hire, annually, and when roles or settings change
PSP covers training in:
- De-escalation
- Nonphysical intervention
- Emergency response
PSP does not provide hands-on physical intervention training.
Element by element →Cal/OSHA
8 CCR §3342(f)(3)- Who
- California healthcare employers
- When
- Annually
PSP covers training in:
- Recognizing escalating behavior
- Verbal de-escalation
- Understanding aggressive behavior
- Restraint decision-making
Hands-on practice must be provided separately.
Element by element →CMS
42 CFR §483.376- Who
- Psychiatric residential treatment facilities
- When
- Semiannually
The standard requires staff to demonstrate competency in:
- De-escalation
- Mediation
- Conflict resolution
- Active listening
PSP covers these areas and includes a scored assessment and live skills demonstration.
Element by element →The Joint Commission · NPG.02.04.01 EP 2
The Joint Commission workplace violence standard
The element sits inside the Joint Commission's broader workplace-violence architecture — Sentinel Event Alert 59 and LD.03.01.01. The standard names four training elements. Most workplace-violence programs deliver three of them well and treat the fourth as an afterthought.
Element by element
Each named element, the PSP™ module that delivers it, and an honest coverage call. Hold any vendor — including this one — against the regulation line by line.
| Named element | PSP™ module | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| De-escalation | 1.4 Communication & De-Escalation — SOLER & the 6-step sequence (2 hrs) · W.4 Psychosis-Specific WPV De-escalation (2 hrs) | Delivered |
| Nonphysical intervention skills | 1.5 Crisis Response — the Five Pillars Model (2 hrs) · 3.3 Tactical Response — posture, positioning, containment | Delivered |
| Physical intervention techniques | 3.2 Team-based physical intervention safety, chemical restraint, continuous monitoring (4.5 hrs) · 2.4 Restraint and seclusion law | Partial |
What this does and does not coverPSP teaches the clinical decision framework around physical intervention — when it is indicated, how a team stays safe, what the law requires, what monitoring follows. It does not teach hands-on holds. Pair it with your existing physical-skills program; PSP is designed to sit as the clinical layer above one, not to replace it. | ||
| Emergency response | 1.5 Crisis team roles & SBAR communication (2 hrs) · 3.1 Crisis Assessment Mastery — CAT, PERT, mobile crisis | Delivered |
What your facility still owes
Training is one input. These stay with you, and no course transfers them.
- Your workplace-violence prevention program, its governance, and its reporting lines.
- Hands-on physical intervention practice, from a physical-skills partner.
- Your own incident analysis and the leadership response to it under LD.03.01.01.
Cal/OSHA · 8 CCR §3342(f)(3)
California health care workplace violence prevention training
Five named content elements. The regulation is explicit that outside training supplements site-specific training and never replaces it — which is why the phrasing on this page matters as much as the coverage.
Element by element
Each named element, the PSP™ module that delivers it, and an honest coverage call. Hold any vendor — including this one — against the regulation line by line.
| Named element | PSP™ module | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| The assault cycle | W.1 WPV Taxonomy & the Psychosis Variable — NIOSH Type I–IV (2 hrs) · 3.3 Pre-violent indicators | Delivered |
| Verbal de-escalation | 1.4 SOLER & the 6-step sequence, including recognition of its limits (2 hrs) · W.4 De-escalation in non-clinical settings | Delivered |
| Characteristics of aggressive and violent patients | 1.2 Recognition — early warning indicators (2 hrs) · 1.3 Risk Assessment — Brøset Violence Checklist | Delivered |
| Appropriate use of restraint | 2.4 Restraints and seclusion — when permitted, legal requirements (2.5 hrs) · 3.2 Chemical restraint and monitoring | Delivered |
| Hands-on practice | 1.7 Live SOLER demonstration, scored (90 min) · 3.6 Live crisis simulation and team-coordination evaluation | Partial |
What this does and does not coverPSP's practicum is scored live demonstration of the de-escalation sequence. It is not hands-on physical technique practice. That element stays with your physical-skills partner. | ||
What your facility still owes
Training is one input. These stay with you, and no course transfers them.
- Your written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan.
- Your hazard assessment and the violent incident log — retained five years; training records one year.
- A live knowledgeable person available to answer questions. Asynchronous coursework does not discharge this; certified PSP trainers on your staff are one way to hold it internally.
- Site-specific training on your own facility, your own layout, your own history.
CMS · 42 CFR §483.376
Psychiatric residential treatment facility staff training
The bar here is different in kind from the others. CMS asks for demonstrated competency, not documented attendance. A roster does not answer it. A competency record does.

| Named element | PSP™ module | Coverage |

| De-escalation | 1.4 SOLER & the 6-step sequence (2 hrs) · W.4 Psychosis-specific de-escalation (2 hrs) | Delivered |
| Mediation and conflict resolution | 1.5 Five Pillars — intervention and recovery, crisis team roles (2 hrs) · 1.6 Family Engagement — validation and boundary-setting | Delivered |
| Active listening | 1.4 Validation without confirming delusional content (2 hrs) · 1.1 Attunement as clinical necessity (2 hrs) | Delivered |
| Demonstrated competency, not attendance | 1.7 25-question written exam, scenario reflections, and a scored live SOLER demonstration (90 min) | Delivered |
NoteThis is the element PSP was built for. Every tier ends in a scored assessment with a stated pass bar, and the certificate records that the exam was passed — not that the course was attended. | ||
What your facility still owes
Training is one input. These stay with you, and no course transfers them.
- Your semiannual scheduling and the evidence it happened on time.
- Restraint and seclusion reporting under §483.374.
- Your facility's own policies and the supervision that enforces them.
Workplace Violence Prevention Concentration
PSP’s Workplace Violence Prevention concentration is designed for organizations that need structured training in de-escalation, behavioral health crises, and workplace violence prevention.
16 hours · 8 modules · $1,499 per learner
Training includes:
- Workplace violence risk
- Psychosis and behavioral health crises
- De-escalation
- Workplace risk assessment
- Law-enforcement coordination
- Post-incident response
- Workplace Violence Prevention Plans
- Program evaluation and documentation
Staff complete a scored 40-question assessment with an 80% passing requirement.
What PSP does not replace
No outside training program can make an organization compliant by itself.
Depending on the standard, your organization may still need to provide:
- A site-specific workplace violence prevention plan
- Facility hazard assessments
- Hands-on physical intervention training
- Incident logs
- Organization-specific policies and procedures
- Required supervision and responsible personnel
PSP provides the training content and documentation that fall within its scope. Your organization remains responsible for the rest.
Training records you can show
PSP gives organizations a record of what each employee completed.
Records can include:
- Modules completed
- Training time
- Topics covered
- Assessment results
- Skills demonstrations
- Certification records
That gives your organization documentation of who was trained, what they were taught, and whether they demonstrated competency.
Which requirements apply to you?
The answer depends on your facility, location, and accreditation.
